RSP – VARANASI

Being a part of existing built fabric and learning through first hand experiences triggers students’ sensitivity and understanding of built environment and its relation with people & architecture. Related study programme is offered as an integral part of curriculum every year to explore indigenous way of making this built environment. This year RSP for second year semester IV and third year semester VI students was conducted at Benares, the mysterious city of India. RSP was conducted for seven days, out of which five days were allotted to the measure drawing & documentation and three days were allotted for exploration of the city.
Forth semester students worked on the measure drawing as well as sixth semester students worked on
the documentation and architectural details.
Architecture of Varanasi reflects diversity in construction, material and detailing. Ancient buildings still stand strong and bold keeping its identity intact. Sand stone buildings with wooden intricate details and red brickwork gives flavor of traditional architecture at Varanasi. Traditional jutting out balconies, three to four storied houses, connected and congested streets along with lots of soot covered temples give welcome to the spiritual city of Varanasi. People from different religion, culture, origin and beliefs live together in a harmony as “Banarasi”. Walking along the ghats in the morning and meandering through the streets in the evening slowly reveals the mystry of Varanasi.
