Housing Studio – ADS IV 19-20
Architecture is a reflection of our society and culture and at the same time, it can influence the way people relate to their surroundings. Housing is a place where individuals find their belonging and a sense of entitlement and identity in a collective living environment. Housing should respond to the needs of individuals to have a dwelling which makes them part of a community. Housing is a whole in itself and it is also a part of the larger whole of the city. It is about the sharing of resources and support systems that a city offers.

Architectural Design Studio -IV (Housing studio) focused on design of residential environments for an urban site at Khanderao Market in Baroda and amidst lush green orchards of Magod village near Valsad town. The contextual response for Urban housing at Baroda involved respecting heritage precinct, response to congested market streets, appropriate use of urban land and incorporation of water-body as part of the site layout. The programme was based on lines of Urban Redevelopment wherein the unit, cluster and site planning responded to characteristics of Urban housing and dwelling typologies. The contextual response to the valsad site revolved around issues of sustainable development wherein attitude to landform, climate, vegetation, building materials, resource conservation, etc took centre stage.
Lockdown on account of COVID’19 directed the studio towards online mode of teaching-learning. Various online pedagogic tools like web-conferencing apps, interactive whiteboards, screen sharing techniques, online reviews and expert talks, etc where used to successfully conduct the studio
