Kalp Day – 1
Every year the students of the Institute of Architecture and Planning, Nirma University organise “Kalp”, the student body festival where they setup an exhibition displaying works of the previous semester, construct installations, participate in workshops, conduct competitions and indulge in various academic and cultural activities. This year Kalp was organised on 27th February, 28th February and 1st March,2023.
The first day started off with students, faculties and staff all decked up in Indian Traditionals’ for the inauguration of the annual exhibition by the chief guests for the event, Ar. Madhav Joshi and Ar. Shilpa Ranade. This was followed by an overall visit of the campus showcasing all the installations prepared and then breakfast in the C-Block courtyard. Ar. Shilpa Ranade discussed her work regarding gender disparity in the Indian Context and brought about crucial points for introspection and discussion. The guest lecture by Ar. Madhav Joshi was quiet enriching and threw light on his works and practice. He discussed his strategies for making conscious designs and sustainable buildings. After lunch, Tie and Dye workshop along with Fluid Art workshop took place simultaneously where students produced their own artworks under the guidance of experts. The day came to an end with performances from students of IAPNU in their cultural night followed by delicious freshly baked pizzas in the pizza oven made by the students themselves. A successful day one was sure to be a great memory for everyone.
Day – 2
The second day started off with inhouse Badminton and Volleyball Tournaments where students from each batch participated in teams. This was followed by a Treasure hunt curated on the theme of Mythology and Fantasy where six teams of students from all the years ran around the university decoding clues. This was followed by a fun talk from the Alumni, titled Chai pe Charcha, where two of our Alumni, Shantanu from the planning department and Hemil from the architecture department discussed their work and journey so far after college. Lunch was followed by guest lectures from Ar. Dean D’Cruz and Ar. KT Ravindran who discussed their work and also had a look at the work of the current urban design studio and master’s studio. Their talks were easy to understand and comprehend even from the students perspective. The second day had a Canvas Painting Workshop where students displayed their creative prowess and painted their ideas in bright colours under the guidance of experts. Every year a Talent Hunt is organised which is a platform for multiple performances including dance, music, drama, monologue, stand-up etc., this year as well all the performances were top notch and compelling. The day came to an end with the annual spoken word event, Kavitra which again saw a lot of participation, it was conducted in the C-D lawn with mattresses and sheets arranged under fairy lights, creating a shamiyana for all the shayars and poets out there.
Day – 3
The last day started off early in the morning with a cyclothon around the Nirma University campus which saw active participation from students and staff. This was followed by an enriching workshop on NFT and a hands-on coffee painting workshop by experts. The day also marked a display of entries for a photography competition conducted under the Women’s Development Cell of Nirma University. A recurring panel discussion on the New Education Policy, the first leg of which was conducted last year was held where eminent people from the field joined in to have a healthy debate on the guidelines for the architecture discourse in the NEP. A guest lecture by Dr. Anjana Vyas outlining the digitalisation in urban areas was a source of great knowledge for the students. An award ceremony was organised to give out prizes to all the winners of various competitions in Kalp and to felicitate the experts who had came in for the workshops. Kalp’23 came to an end with a collaborative concert with Redo(fest of IDNU) where a Sunburn Campus was organised for all the students, staff, faculties of Nirma University where everyone danced and enjoyed to mark the culmination of the three day festival.
