The students of 3rd and 4th year B Arch programme from the Institute of Architecture and Planning, Nirma University, Ahmedabad visited Varkala for a Field Studio Programme from 7th to 16th January, 2023. Prof Utpal Sharma – Director of the Institute; Dr. Aparna – Associate Professor; Ms. Prachi Patel – Assistant Professor and Ar. Biswanath Mudi – Assistant Professor mentored the 54 students. The objective was to study the socio-economic and environmental concerns of the built environment in the famous pilgrim centre and beach tourism destination. Students made proposals for urban design interventions based on their study and presented it in front of a jury at Varkala Rangakala Kendram on 14th January 2023. The jury was attended by Mr. Ramachandran Potty – Director Rangakala Kendram, Prof (Dr.) Bejene Kothari – HoD of Architecture and Planning at CET, (Trivandrum) and other local experts like Architect Sushin, Dr. Sanjay and Mr. Lenin – Secy, Varkala Tourism Development Association, Mr. Dharmashilan and Advocate Mr. Jain. The students received insightful feedback on their work.
