This studio is aimed as an introduction to fundamentals of architectural design by exploring ‘space making through the understanding of the human body’ and developing a basic skill set of drawing, model making and understanding scale. The exploration of designing spaces occurs by familiarizing students to anthropometry, emphasizing on the body and space relationship. This is achieved through a series of exercises designed to introduce students to static dimensions of the human body and dynamic dimensions of human activities such as through study of daily activities and space required for each. While their basic understanding is developed, they also learn tools to express such as by various representation techniques such as sketching, drafting drawings to scale, and model making. A volumetric exploration of space requirements as well as understanding spatial qualities is encouraged, finally translating this understanding from body and activity to built space. The final exercise of making a space for one person reinforces their learnings of the relationship of space as extension of human activities, to make them observant regarding how space is both formed and manipulated through activity.
